Rate: 35 - 50 hourly on 1099
The Technical Writer supports the development, revision, and governance of standards, procedures, job aids, and related process documentation. This role combines strong writing and editing skills with process analysis, stakeholder engagement, and document control discipline to ensure guidance documents are clear, accurate, consistent, compliant, and usable by the intended audience.
Job Duties Summary
- Draft, revise, and maintain standards, procedures, work instructions, job aids, and other controlled documents in alignment with approved templates, governance requirements, and business expectations.
- Partner with subject matter experts, process owners, document owners, approvers, and impacted stakeholders to gather requirements, clarify technical content, validate process steps, and resolve open questions.
- Analyze processes and documentation to identify gaps, inconsistencies, unclear ownership, outdated information, and opportunities to simplify, standardize, and improve usability.
- Translate complex operational, technical, and process information into clear, concise, audience-appropriate instructions and supporting materials.
- Map current-state and future-state processes, including roles, decision points, handoffs, dependencies, controls, and implementation responsibilities.
- Coordinate document reviews, comment resolution, approval routing, version updates, publication readiness, document control verification, and traceability across related standards, procedures, records, and reference materials.
- Support Management of Change (MOC) by documenting key changes, impacts, and required implementation or communication actions.
- Support CRESS Enterprise Guidance document CMR metrics by tracking, updating, and reporting guidance document status, quality, and compliance-related information.
Job Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Technical Writing, Communications, Business, Process Improvement, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Three or more years of experience in technical writing, procedure development, operational documentation, or a related documentation governance role.
- Strong writing, editing, organization, and document-structuring skills, with the ability to produce clear, consistent, audience-appropriate content.
- Demonstrated ability to work with cross-functional stakeholders, manage feedback, and drive documentation through review and approval processes.
- Working knowledge of document control principles, including version management, ownership, revision tracking, metadata, and controlled repositories.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, SharePoint, Teams, Excel, and collaboration or review tools.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience with process mapping, workflow analysis, continuous improvement, compliance documentation, or procedure lifecycle management.
- Background in asset management, facilities, utilities, operations, or other technical support environments.
- Familiarity with standards governance, Management of Change, stakeholder communication planning, or enterprise guidance documentation.
